8 simple steps to building a website that will be mobile friendly (PROMOTED)

0

Small screen or “mobile” devices have finally overtaken traditional laptops and desktops as the most popular way to browse the Internet.

This not only explains Google’s algorithm shifts to re-rank mobile-friendly websites higher in search engine results, but also reinforces why it is in every blogger’s, business owner’s and entrepreneur’s best interests to ensure the most mobile-friendly website.

In this article, learn 8 simple steps to follow for building a mobile-friendly website.

Step 1: Study current site analytics thoroughly

Any site design or redesign should build on the strengths of a previous site. Here, analysis of analytics will offer critical insight into the following:

  • What type of information users are seeking when they access the site.
  • What the most common tasks are (for example, signing up for an email list group, making a purchase, clipping coupons, reading blog posts, et al).
  • Which pages generate the most hits and in what order (this analytic speaks directly to site navigation).

Step 2: Emphasize simplicity of function

A mobile user doesn’t want to sift through a mountain of information to find what they are seeking. Mobile users typically have both less time and less patience when accessing the web from a small screen device.

This makes simplicity the win-win of the mobile marketing world. A mobile website that uses its own analytics to streamline and simplify mobile users’ experiences will move up ever higher in the search engine rankings.

Step 3: Focus on thematic consistency

A successful mobile-friendly website will not appear to be fundamentally different from its full site counterpart. This is often referred to as “responsive web design,” which basically translates to mean that the site template itself is smart enough to sense the screen size of the device it is being accessed from and adjust its display accordingly.

Many templates today have inbuilt thematic responsiveness. Be sure to verify that the selected template offers this functionality before beginning to create a website.

Step 4: Don’t forget about loading speed

If a website doesn’t load on a small screen mobile device in two seconds or less, you will get at best one more second before 40 percent of site visitors will depart. Most will never return again.

Page loading speed is a function of several components:

  • Web-optimized site graphics and images
  • Selection of a web host with generous bandwidth per client
  • Clean, clear, simple CSS
  • Nonresponsive Javascripts
  • Poor cache management
  • Too many 301 redirects

Step 5: Choose the right web host

If there is one fact that can be counted in the world of all things web, it is this: there will always be plenty of web hosting providers to choose from. However, it is important to know what to look for to choose a host that will provide maximum performance, uptime and loading speed.

These elements can signal a high quality web hosting provider:

  • 99.99 percent uptime
  • Providing up-time and reliability guarantees
  • Easy integration with third-party tools and apps
  • Posted minimum/maximum traffic per hosting (shared, dedicated, et al) options
  • Generous bandwidth (20 MB or higher) per site options
  • Highly responsive technical and customer service support.

Also be sure to do independent research to read what other users with similar sites say about any given web host before selecting the host. This will offer insight into whether the testimonials and claims on a host’s own website are accurate.

Step 6: Be sure font and button sizes and styles are optimized for mobile viewing

Viewing a site on a smaller screen tablet or phone can make for an uncomfortable experience if font or button sizes are too small. And zoom screen options, while helpful to magnify small text, then reduce some of the functionality of the web page itself.

Ideally, each page of a mobile website should be simple enough to allow for highly viewable font and button sizes on each page. Pages that become too cluttered with images or text or interaction options are pages that are no longer mobile-friendly.

Testing should include users with a variety of finger sizes (to test button size) and users with vision impairment (to test for font size) as well as tests for overall small screen visibility and usability.

Step 7: Forego complicating factors like pop-ups and Flash animation

While these types of tools may be useful when installed on full-screen websites, they are reliably problematic when used for smaller screen site experiences.

Flash may not even work on some mobile device operating systems, and pop-ups can obscure the page on a small screen device to such an extent that the visitor just gives up and leaves.

As well, selecting the simplest and most concise page titles, meta-descriptions and URLs will all help to optimize the new mobile website for higher browser search engine rankings (regardless of the specific browser selected for use on that device).

Step 8: Be sure to run Google’s mobile-friendly web test and speed test

Google’s development team has made two essential tools available for free to website developers: a mobile-friendly test tool and a page speed test tool. Before signing off on a new mobile-friendly website, be sure to run both tools to determine if all objectives have been successfully met.

By following these eight steps to create a website, the end result will be a site that is faster, friendlier and more useful to mobile visitors and desktop/laptop visitors. While it will take more planning and preparation work on the front end, the actual design and implementation process will then proceed faster because the major design details have been worked out in advance.

Testing will also proceed more smoothly because most of the major mobile obstacles and bugs will have been identified and solved for in advance. The reward will be a lovely, responsive site visitors love.

Christmas is approaching quickly and if you haven’t purchased a gift for your kid yet, Verizon might have what you need. The carrier has just released a new child friendly tablet dubbed the GizmoTab, designed for children aged 3 to 8.

The GizmoTab features an 8-inch HD display (720p resolution) and a Snapdragon 617 processor breathing life into the device from under the hood. The slate has 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory (expandable via microSD cardslot up to 128GB).

Children can use the slate to take photos as well thanks to the 8MP main camera and a 5MP selfie snapper. A big plus of the GizmoTab is the hefty 5,100 mAh battery which will keep the tablet going for a long time.

The tablet comes encased in a (removable) bumper, which protects against accidental drops and bumps.

As you can see the tablet is quite decent spec-wise. What we’re not told is whether the device allows parents to limit accessibility to certain apps or overall usage of the tablet.

We do know that GizmoTab arrives with a series of 300 premium learning apps including approved by educational experts. Kids will be able to find titles like Crayola, DreamWorks Animation, Hasbro, National Geographic, Toca Boca, Sesame Workship, HiT Entertainment or The Jim Henson Company on board. Don’t expect a new Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch anytime soon

2

I haven’t seen many wearables launch in the last few months have you? Apart from Samsung’s Gear S3 and ASUS’ ZenWatch 3 going on sale, there hasn’t been much action in this particular niche.

Actually interest for smartwatches and related seems to be going downwards. And don’t think that smartwatch makers like Motorola haven’t noticed it. Actually if you were hoping to see a next-gen Moto 360 smartwatch arrive on the market any time soon, you’re probably going to be disappointed.

no-more-motorola-wearables

Launched in 2014, the original Moto 360 captured the attention of wearable fans with its sleek curvaceous design. Many reviewers said the Moto 360 proved to be a success because it resembled so a traditional watch so much. Motorola even released a next-gen Moto 360 in 2015, but it seems the smartwatch’s momentum has faded.

more-moto-360-2nd-gen

Talking to The Verge, Moto’s Head of Global Product development Shakil Barkat said that the company doesn’t “see enough full in the market” to be considering a new smartwatch in the near future. Motorola recognizes wearables do not have enough appeal, so refreshing its smartwatch lineup every year does not make sense.

Android Wear 2.0 will be unveiled in early 2017, but Motorola may not be listed as a partner anymore. Although LG is rumored to be working on a series of new intelligent timepieces dubbed Watch Style, Watch Pro, Watch Force and Watch Solo.

lg-watch-urbane

After the Pixel, Google might also decide it’s time to unveil an Android Wear smartwatch of its own. And HTC’s elusive Halfbeak prototype has been spotted around the web a few months ago, indicating HTC might also launch a new wearable in the near future.

A recent report released by IDC wearables, revealed that sales in the wearable market declined with 52% in Q3 compared to the same time period in 2015.

Furthermore, we’ve heard that Fibit might be interested in acquiring Pebble – a smartwatch startup that used to be quite popular. But recent developments indicate that both wearable makers are striving to survive.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 2017 and if the smartwatch will be able to make a comeback.

It’s a great moment to be an Amazon Prime subscriber, as the retail giant has recently announced that starting December 1, it will be adding two new streaming options via Amazon Channels in the form of HBO and Cinemax.

hbo-prime-time

Amazon Prime members, can get a HBO subscription for $14.99 a month after a 30-day trial period. For those who prefer Cinemax, the fee is cheaper at $9.99 a month. Note that these fees are not included in the $99 you have to pay to be a Prime member.

How to hack-proof your Android in 2016 (PROMOTED)

2

It is sometimes easy to overlook the importance of ensuring our smartphones are secure. We all know that our laptops and desktops need to be equipped with anti-virus protection, firewalls, and various other tools.

But too many people still get swept up in the excitement of new apps and functions, and overlook the importance of downloading the right security tools as well.

Yet as smartphones become more and more ubiquitous, so they are being targeted ever more by hackers and cyber-criminals who see another window into your personal data and financial information.

The stats can be quite scary at times when people actually take a look at the security vulnerabilities in an Android phone. For example, it was recently reported that the new Quadrooter attack could put as many as 900 million Android phones at risk.

Then there is the story that researchers have demonstrated a 92% success rate in hacking Android apps. I could list more.

The core facts are equally as disconcerting. In 2014, there were more than a million recorded breaches of smartphones in the USA – the actual total number will have been much higher. In the same year, 5.2 million smartphones were lost in the USA alone. And it has also been reported that 25% of Android phones encounter a threat at least once a month.

Yet despite all the evidence, we are still using our unsecured smartphones to do communicate sensitive information, do online banking, and also indulge in things like online shopping.

All of these put potentially sensitive information at risk, and with Cyber-Monday having just passed, there is no better time to think about securing your Android device.

There are no end of different security apps on the market for Android users and it can sometimes be hard for users to work out which is the right one for them. Which is why we have put together an expert guide on how to hack-proof your Android in 2016:

Use a Passcode

Too many people disregard the option of putting a passcode on their Android device because it is too much of a hassle to enter it every time they want to use it.

But a passcode is an essential security tool and every Android user should make use of it, without exception. We would also strongly advise you to opt for a six-digit code rather than a four-digit one. A four-digit code can be cracked by a hacker in a relatively short time, but a six-digit code can take months. This means most hackers will give up and move onto to someone else’s device.

For an inconvenience for just a couple of seconds, you can vastly increase the security of your device.

Use a Privacy Screen Protector

As high-tech as some hackers are, the old-fashioned approach is still surprisingly effective, and there are still plenty of thieves out there who will pee over your shoulder to steal your information as you are using your Android device.

The best way to protect against this is to use a Privacy Screen protector. These are like slightly thicker screen covers with ridges that mean only the person looking straight at the device can read what’s on the screen.

They don’t effect functionality at all and do protect against one of the most common types of security vulnerability.

Use a Firewall

We all use firewalls on our desktops and laptops, but a worryingly small number do on their smartphone.

Everybody should have a Firewall on their Android device though as they offer a vital security wall to protect your device and your data from the threat of hackers.

There are lots on the market, and different ones will be right for different users, but no matter which one you go for, be sure to get one.

Use a VPN

Last, but by no means least, every Android user should be running a VPN. A VPN will encrypt all of your online traffic making everything you do online secure from hackers and other prying eyes.

It will also redirect all your traffic via an external server which will render you anonymous online and so greatly enhance your online privacy.

There are other perks too, such as enabling you to watch geo-restricted content no matter where in the world you are, and put together the benefits make the small price of a VPN one of the best investments you will make on your Android device.

Gooligan Android malware found to have infected 1 million Google accounts

0

If you’re in the habit of installing applications from third party app stores (meaning not from the Google Play Store) then you might want to listen to this. Apparently there’s a new malware in town going by the name of Gooligan, which is capable of doing nasty things to your Google account.

Gooligan was unearthed by security firm Check Point Research and according to them the vulnerability already breached more than 1 million Google accounts.

This is how it all works. Users install apps from unofficial sources which get the malware onboard of the phone. From there Gooligan ends up stealing email information and authentication tokens for accessing Google accounts. Hackers can use that information to install apps from the Google Play Store on the device in order to boost in-app advertising revenue. This is done without the user’s knowledge or consent.

the-growing-threat-of-gooligan

Check Point also noted attackers can also use the information to get data from Google Play, Gmail, Google Photos, Google Docs and Google Drive.

The search firm says that numbers of breached accounts are rising by 13,000 emails on a daily basis. Check Point also claims it has notified Google of the problem.

What’s even worse is that Gooligan is said to be capable of injecting code into the Google Play Store, thus spreading its venom onto the apps that are supposed to be safe. In order to monetize these infected apps, attackers are flooding them with ads. The malware also forced devices to leave positive reviews and high ratings for the infected apps on Google Play.

Check Point calls this the “largest Google account breach to date” with the majority of infected devices located in Asia (57%), although 28% are said to be located in the Americas/Europe.

gooligan-breaches

However, we should note one important detail. Only devices running Android Lollipop or older are affected. So if you have Marshmallow or Nougat running on your phone or tablet, you should be safe from Gooligan.

However, according to Google’s recent numbers, more than 75% of Android users are currently running Lollipop or lower.

Google’s Director or Android Security, Adrian Ludwig has already reached out to uses, saying that Google has worked closely with Check Point in order to come up with ways to protect users against the Gooligan thread.

beware-of-gooligan

The search giant has revoked affected tokens and has been using Verify Apps on Android devices to block Gooligan-infected apps. When malicious activity is detected, owners receive a warning and installations are halted.

Back in 2015, Google noted in its Android security report that a third of Android apps downloaded via third-party app stores were infected with Ghost Push. Well Gooligan is an even more aggressive version of Ghost Push.

keep-your-eyes-out-for-malware

If you too have downloaded apps from non-Google Play app stores, you can go ahead and visit Check Point’s blog post to see the list of 86 apps known to have been infected with Gooligan. You can also use this tool to see whether your account has been affected.

Check Point also advertises its own Mobile Thread Prevention tool which is said to “keep Android and iOS devices connected to your organization’s network safe from advanced attacks like Gooligan.” Users can request a free demo. Got to monetize such a big malware campaign, right?

Fitbit Charge 2 review

0

With phones and apps getting smarter all of the time, it’s easy to track your basic movements and activities. Be it counting steps in Google Fit or heart rate monitoring in a Samsung phone, it’s not hard to keep up with your basic health-related tasks. But, by being able to do everything in a handset, the question arises of whether we need purchase additional hardware. Is it worth it to buy a fitness band, activity tracker, or smartwatch?  And, if so, which is a good brand to start with?

fitbit_charge2_box

Fitbit is one of the first names that pop up when the discussion turns to wearables, and rightfully so. It offers a wide range of activity trackers, each of which comes with different features and price points to match. One of its latest, the Charge 2, is a $150 affair that builds on a predecessor by adding new hardware and features.

We’ve had a Fitbit Charge 2 for the last few weeks as it was provided to us by Fitbit for review consideration. What follows is our impressions of the wearable, its hardware features, and its accompanying app. Spoiler alert: we love the Fitbit 2 and think it’s probably the best value you can get from the brand.

What is the Fitbit Charge 2?

As part of the “Active” models in the Fitbit lineup, the Charge 2 offers up more than just step counting, sleep tracking, and other basic functions. It’s not quite along the lines of a full-on smartwatch or the Fitbit Blaze, but it’s a terrific middle ground unit.

If you’re the type of person who wants to keep an eye on how much you’re moving, heart rate, how you’re sleeping, and other activities, this is the one to consider. Moreover, it ties nicely to your phone, delivering call, text and other notifications as well. It’s smarter than a traditional activity tracker and half the price of a full-on Android Wear or Apple Watch experience.

fitbit_charge2_clasp

The Charge 2, while a successor to an already existing model, picks up some of the functions of the Charge HR. In other words, it now offers the heart rate monitor. From what we can tell, Fitibit has merged the Charge and Charge HR into one experience for this season.

Features of the Fitbit 2 include an always-on heart rate monitor, an OLED display, swappable bands, and a five-day battery. It’s the sort of thing that’s comfortable to wear, easy to read, and designed to get through a work week. You can do just about anything you want with it, just don’t wear it in the shower or to go swimming.

Design

The Fitbit Charge 2 is available in three sizes (Small, Large, and Extra Large) and comes in no less than four standard color options: Black/Silver, Blue/Silver, Plum/Silver, and Teal Silver.

Additionally, there are two special edition textured colors (Lavender/Rose Gold and Black/Gunmetal) which can be had for a $30 premium. Shop the Fitbit official store and you’ll find there are leather bands which can be purchased, switching it from hip and modern to classy or demure.

fitbit_charge2_sensor

The default bands are made of a flexible, durable elastomer material that bends and flexes like most smartwatch bands and wearables. It’s rugged enough to take bumps and scrapes without getting scuffs but it’s flexible enough to move when in a pinch.

A little bit bulky, it’s still sleek and unassuming. It’s not uncommon to see people wearing stuff like this in 2016; the Fitbit Charge 2 is every bit as modern looking as you’d expect. The colors might sound more vibrant or attention grabbing, but in practice they are muted and professional shades.

The bands buckle like a traditional watch and are comprised of “surgical-grade” stainless steel. We found it easy to put on and take off after only a few tries and now it’s a mindless process before showering or swimming

Display

The Fitbit Charge 2 houses an OLED display that provides images and text which are easy to read and discern. Be it checking heart rate, glancing at notifications, or simply eyeballing the time, it’s sharp and clear.

fitbit_charge2_arm

The screen is not always on, but a simple lift-to-peek gesture works to bring up the display. Moreover, you can also tap on the display to wake it or press the button on the side, too.

Functions

The Fitbit Charge 2 does quite a bit on its own, including functions such as stopwatch, exercise tracking mode, heart rate, and a new “Relax” mindfulness app. There’s not much need to open the app on your phone throughout the day unless you are looking to dive deeper into stats and historical data.

The Fitbit Charge 2 is capable of tracking distance, calories burned, active minutes, floors climbed, stationary time, sleep quality, and hourly activity. Additionally, it can connect to your phone for GPS stats on distance and mapping. The SmartTrack feature can automatically detect certain activities and record them in the app in a mindless and pain-free way.

fitbit_charge2_steel

The aforementioned “Relax” option is a guided and timed focused breathing exercise. Designed to center you, it coaches you into a breathing pattern based off of actual heart rate readings. It’s a nice touch that you might not use all that often, but one that’s welcome when you want or need it.

We also appreciate that the watch can detect that you’ve been sitting idle for too long. A gentle vibration and encouraging word pop up on the display to remind you that it might be time to get up and stretch those legs. You might be surprised at how quickly an hour rolls around.

App

One area where Fitbit has gotten exponentially better over the years is in the area of its apps. The Charge 2’s dashboard is comprehensive and full of all sorts of wonderful details. If you’re looking for historical data, there’s plenty here to dig through.

It’s also in the app where you can record stats for water intake or weight; users can also adjust personal goals for movement. Is it hard to get in 10,000 steps in a day? Set things down a bit and start celebrating a more attainable goal first and then move on to more lofty ambitions.

charge_2_app_splash

The Cardio Fitness Level is a really cool way of looking at your overall fitness level. Rather than simply giving you dry statistics, this becomes more of a game or score. In short, it takes everything it knows into consideration and provides you with a number. The goal is to raise that number with activity, weight loss, better sleep, etc. The app can help set realistic expectations and will work to get you there, but you just have to hold yourself accountable.

Conclusion

Battery life, at five days, was great and we appreciate only having to charge it up once or twice in any given week. Speaking of which, we kind of dig the charging mechanism and clamp which hold things in place.

There’s a lot to be said about the overall accuracy of consumer-grade wearables. Numbers can vary from one brand to another and things could change with a simple firmware update. But, when you take something like the Charge 2 as a whole and work with it, it’s a great way to get a base line read on your life.

Sure, steps might differ once in a while, but you can generally take the numbers as a solid indicator on things. Are you moving in the right direction? Are you even physically moving? The same goes for sleep. Maybe these wearable devices are not going to truly be able to discern between light and deep sleep, at least not for this price. What they can do, though, is tell you that you’ve been getting an average of five hours over the last two weeks and that you need more sleep.

fitbit_charge2_clip

Although Fitbit says the Charge 2 can take the occasional splash in stride, we would love to keep it on all day. Showers are a risk because of the jet streams and it’s simply not built for diving deep into water. If it were able to handle the former, we’d be totally fine without the latter. With that said, don’t sweat it if you’re sweaty. A summer rain isn’t going to do anything to your Charge 2, either.

There’s no internal GPS in the Fitbit Charge 2, but we’re okay with that. When paired with a phone and apps it can keep a nice set of data for runs, bike rides, and walks. You’ll need to keep your phone with you if you’d like

As a whole, there’s very little here for us to fault. The price is right and the functionality is more than what most people need. We might like a smarter experience in something like an Android Wear, but we’d have to drop twice the money. The Fitbit Charge 2 is a solid wearable from top to bottom.

Where to Buy

The Fitbit Charge 2 can be purchased at Fitbit’s site as well as other established retailers. Moreover, you may find it on the shelves of your wireless service provider. Pricing, as indicated above, is listed at $150. Below are some links to get you headed in a few directions.
