LG Overtakes Sony Ericsson

Written by AndroidGuys • Jun 3rd, 2008 • Category: Hardware News, Recent News

While you weren’t, looking LG has overtaken Sony Ericsson to claim the number 4 spot among handset manufacturers world wide. According to a report on Wireless Week here’s how the numbers stack up:

Sony Ericsson sold 22.1 million units in the quarter, for a market share of 7.5%

LG sold 23.6 million units in the 1st quarter for a market share of 8%.

LG can credit much of it’s success to the US market where carriers such as Verizon Wireless and Alltel offer several of their handsets. It should come as no surprise that Nokia continues to lead the way world wide coming in at number 1.

What is a surprise is that the iPhone lost some of it’s smartphone market share, as it was down 7.5% from the first quarter. RIM led the way among smart phone sales claiming a whopping 44.5% of the market. That Blackberry ain’t just for your daddy anymore! Palm and Samsung came in third and fourth respectively among smart phones.

We didn’t expect to see HTC absent from the top 5, but we suspect that will change once Android is up and running. You can read the complete article here.
