No Android in 2008?

Written by AndroidGuys • Jun 2nd, 2008 • Category: Leaks, Rumors, and Hacks, Recent News

A rather odd article showed up today over at TheStreet which had us considering not even covering it. The author, Gary Krakow is spreading a rumor that 2008 will come and go without seeing Android in the real world. We’re not buying it…yet. Why? They refer to it as the gPhone twice like there is only one device coming that will run the platform. Everybody knows that there’s more than one handset in development. Citing “sources familiar with the situation”, Krakow says that there are a lot of people hard at work on the handset.

We too have our sources, as well as some common sense. For months now, we’ve known, speculated, and prophesized that the first Android handsets will be coming at the end of this year. Most likely, an HTC device from T-Mobile will show up just in time for the holidays. What else do we know? Well, it will be the Dream handsets, but with a different name branded on it for T-Mobile.

Krakow’s article has since been updated with a few more paragraphs that don’t say anything to further the speculation. Something tells us that this guy gets paid for page views and not accuracy. Treat this rumor as junk until AndroidGuys tells you otherwise.

  1. Suggested new post category: “Android FUD” or just FUD. You will see a proliferation of it as the days click down to a real world handset running Android. RIAA style tactics seem to be starting already. Hmmmmm…

Very tempted to buy that Texas Instruments OMAP hardware, install current version of Android, send it FedEx Mr. Krakow office, and use FedEx’s almost instant SMS service that notifies you your package has been signed for…then call him on the OMAP hardware.

    Krakow: “Hello?”
Me: “You are talking to me on a gPhone.”

  2. From my small investigation into the delay matter I came up with a bit of news that seem to say Android will not be delayed but that rumored Google branded Android phone. Still not sure what is what though.

  3. Obviously I am unacquainted with The Street’s source, but I am happy to reassure developers that the source is simply wrong, and that there has been no change in our expected ship date. We do indeed still expect devices to be available in the second half of 2008.

  4. I’m not marketer by no means, but I wish there were *something* leaked about an actual upcoming handset before WWDC next week. Pics, video, actual specs. Anything really, to reassure folks who are on the fence. I’m not the type of person who can afford to buy a bandolier of phones, and the bird-in-hand of an iPhone next week vs. the next-to-nothing known about when or even whether there will be an acceptable Android option, well, it’s really not a competition right now.

  5. Ironically, that same guy JUST wrote a new article calling the recent Android preview “mind-blowing” … and in the same article (page 3) he goes on to say:

“Gphone, Android-based phone, or whatever you want to call it — I think we’ll begin seeing the first samples in time for this year’s holiday shopping season.”
