About That Demo Phone

So the other day, we all got treated to the videos of Android running in all its pre-release glory. After being impressed with the cool software features we were shown, the natural tendency was to start asking about the hardware. Did we just see the HTC Dream? With no official manufacturer or model number given, a few specs were provided. That’s not to say the bloggers and developers weren’t asking. When pressed, the answer was the old standby with words like “privacy, cannot disclose, protect…” Fair enough. We didn’t truly expect Google to say “Yeah, we just demonstrated the new HTC phone too.

So let’s pretend for a moment that what we saw was the Dream. Putting those facts together with what we already knew, here’s a running list of hardware for the first Android phone.

  • Capacitive Touchscreen
  • 5″ long x 3″ wide
  • Slide out or swivel QWERTY keypad
  • Internet navigational controls below screen
  • 3.6Mbps HSDPA
  • 128MB RAM / 256MB ROM
  • 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A processor

The only thing that doesn’t seem to fit is the slide out/swivel kepyad. We didn’t see one in the video, but at the same time, it was not needed for the purpose of demonstration. Still, the device looks consistent with recent HTC offerings.

What do you guys think? Was that the Dream phone?

  1. I’m not sure if that was the HTC Dream phone but that sure was “my dream” phone. Very Very cool.

  2. Just like in the automotive industry, where they use early sheet metal stampings of a yet to be release new car, and hand make a “show car” to preview to the public - that Gphone was the same idea.

I believe the phone in the demonstration was a hand built, “one shot” custom piece of hardware. Probably made up of a bunch of HTC parts, but its not necessarily the Dream. Here’s the people from

  3. What they showed was a reference phone, with all the hardware crammed in but without the nifty designee shell we all look for when we pick a phone up in the shop.

Final specs and form factor are probably yet to be decided - Expect a slightly jazzed up version of what we have already seen.

  4. I met the HTC guy at google io, he didnt confirm nor deny it’s the HTC dream. But very likely it is…

  5. I hope its not.
