Verizon Disses Google’s Android & OHA

Written by AndroidGuys • May 15th, 2008 • Category: Carrier News, Recent News

Can’t we all just get along? It seems the battle between Google and Verizon has taken yet another turn. Instead of endorsing Google’s Android as it’s next primary OS for Verizon branded phones, the number 2 US carrier has instead chosen the LiMo Foundation. Here’s a quote from Verizon as to why they chose LiMo over Android.

“We chose LiMo because it’s a collaborative effort. It’s not just one company runs the place. We like that. We like a collegial and collaborative effort, where there is no barrier to entry on the part of developers and, at the end of the day, there is no one entity that can say ‘OK, here’s how we were playing now. The rules are changed.”

How many of you are choking on your food and falling out of your chairs right now? The above quote comes from a company that is currently fighting with Google about making their newly acquired 700 Mhz spectrum open, per the pre auction agreements. Verizon was also one of the last carriers to join the new “open movement” and they did so rather half heartedly. We’re glad they’re changing their approach to openess, but such a statement comes off as just a bit hypocritical.

Verizon did go on to say that they will offer Google’s Android handsets as well, siting their current line up of handsets which includes OS’ from the likes of RIM, PALM and BREW.

Looks like the wireless landscape is changing yet again. Change is great, isn’t it?

  1. Well at least they will offer Android phones too.
Question is when? If they don’t carry any of the first HTC Android Phones I might switch carriers.

  2. I think it’s full time T-Mobile and Sprint do a merger and put a cap in Verizon’s forehead. They will find a way to get a certain amount of control over LiMo phones since they are sitting on the board.
