Written by AndroidGuys • May 13th, 2008 • Category: Developer Challenge News, Developer News, Recent News

Now that there are 46 known winners from the first round of the Android Developers Challenge, we have a definite idea as to what potential exists for the platform. We can’t imagine what some of these will look like or how they’ll operate with more time and money given to the cause. AndroidGuys is here to provide you readers with a little bit more detail than just names and developers. We’re going to do our best to give you a few extra tidbits so you get a better feel for what’s in store.

Application Name: Android Scan
Developer: Jeffrey Sharkey
Website: http://scan.jsharkey.org/
What they say: Scan is an Android application that finds pricing and metadata for anything with a barcode. Shows CD, DVD, or book cover along with detailed reviews from Amazon.com. Tracklisting for CDs, along with option to play sample tracks right on phone. For books, searches local libraries to see if they have a copy.
What we say: This program ought to revolutionize the way you competitively shop. Scanning a barcode before buying will be second nature. Look for the best price on all of your music, books, and movies right from your Android phone!

Application Name: Beetaun
Developer: Sergey Gritsyuk and Dmitri Shipilov
Website: http://beetaun.com/
What they say:Beetaun is a social network around geographical content created by people and for people (from your neighborhood, from your city, from your country, from all over the world). Beetaun is expected to be a highly scalable and multidimensional service that could be of use for everyone from travelers to “treasure hunters”, from sightseers to hitchhikers, from joggers to people first time in the city.
What we say: We’re purely guessing here, but it sounds like a geolocation program that helps with points of interest or places worth visiting. We’re anxious to see what kind of application a treasure hunter might enjoy.

Application Name: BioWallet
Developer: Jose Luis Huertas Fernandez
Website:
What they say: Biometric authenticationn system currently supportng iris based authentication. Password manager that uses strong encryption systems with no need of passwords. Can act as biometric single‐sign on platform for Android services.
What we say: Regardless of what’s on your handset, you need to protect it. The more mobile you are, the more data you’re likely to carry. This application should ensure nobody gets access to your files. That is of course, unless someone steals your eye right out of your head.

Application Name: BreadCrumbz
Developer: Amos Yoffe
Website: http://www.bcrumbz.com/
What they say: BreadCrumbz’ unique approach to navigation enables a new kind of user-created geo-content. Our aim is to develop a platform and a community where people create, store and share geo-content that is meaningful to them with their friends (”find my house”, “where I left my car at the airport”) or with the world (”best mountainbiking route in the area”, “find my cool shop”, “to your hospital’s department of suregery”, etc.).
What we say: This program should make it considerably easier for people to find their way back to where the car was parked. It’s a great utility for those of us who need more than just directions printed out or using the traditional map. Seeing the actual points and landmarks will make things far more convenient.

Application Name: CallACab
Developer: Konrad Huebner, Henning Boeger
Website:
What they say: Helps to call a cab in a foreign country when you do not have the local cab number. Location‐aware: No need to know where you are. No call necessary: Never get a busy line.
What we say: Perfect for the on-the-go guy or world traveler. Easy access to hailing a taxi makes it a cinch for you to get home safely on those late nights after drinking with the buddies. The best part is you don’t need to know where you are, only where you want to be.

Application Name: City Slikkers
Developer: PoroCity Media and Virtual Logic Systems
Website: http://cityslikkers.com/
What they say: City Slikkers is a Pervasive Game (alternatively Location Based Game) which takes place in the real-existing city. It is designed to connect a large number of players through-out the world and change the way the surroundings are seen. The central idea behind the concept is to give people the opportunity to symbolically interfere with the everyday urban environment and come into contact with previously unknown people. By introducing a metaphorical recapture of the city‘s elements (buildings, squares, streets), a virtual reorganization of the urban space leads to a new relationship between the players and their environment.
What we say: We can’t help but get excited over what’s in store for us when it comes to real world gaming. We’re very curious to see what kind of game mixes “strategy, role-playing, sports, social and tactical games”.

Application Name: Commandro
Developer: Alex Pisarev, Andrey Tapekha
Website: http://commandro.net/
What they say: Commandro shows where are your friends REALLY are and what are they’re doing at the moment. We use GPS location information in order to make sure that you and your friends have actually reached the planned destinations, and, hence, will display 100% true real-life event and location information with regards to your and your friends. Commandro allows to create activity plans with nesting and overlapping activities. Then Commandro will use its algorithms, based on GPS location information and user-configured activity sensitivity radius parameter. This is done in order to figure out which activity is most relevant, and, hence, should be displayed to you and your friends.
What we say: This program looks exactly like what we envisioned when it comes to keeping track of your friends and favorite places. Combining messaging and searching is just a bonus on top of what seems like an already solid application.

Application Name: Cooking Capsules
Developer: Mary Ann Cotter and Muthuselvam Ramadoss
Website: http://www.cookingcapsules.com/
What they say:Cooking Capsules is the first smart phone utility of it’s kind. Cooking Capsules are for anyone who wants to simplify the process of cooking. Simply “watch” a very short cooking show, “shop” with the grocery list, and “make” using the handy step-by-step recipe directions. If you are out of your usual neighborhood you can use the ‘find nearest market’ gps feature. If your friend is stopping at the market, simply hit the ’send to friend’ button to text your list to them.
What we say: This will probably appeal to every type of Android user, from bachelors to soccer moms. It’s a very handy tool to have in the kitchen and with you at the store. Could be the secret ingredient in wooing your next date!

Application Name: Diggin
Developer: Daniel Johansson, Aramis Waernbaum, Andreas Hedin
Website:
What they say: A new and exciting way to explore, manage & personalize your music collection. Progressive display and download of album covers. Design your own record crates. Intuitive drag and drop user interface.
What we say: Without seeing it in action, we can’t say a whole lot yet. It looks like a rather simple and easy to learn interface. The “record crate” feature has piqued our interest. We’re wondering if we can make virtual mixtapes to save and/or send for trying to win our girl back.

Application Name: Dyno
Developer: Virachat Boondharigaputra
Website:
What they say: Evaluate automobile performance on the road.  Real‐time horse power & speed calculation from acceleration
data.  Customizable car setting.
What we say: We imagine this would appeal to high end car owners more than the average user.  It could also come in very handy for auto mechanics and car enthusiasts.
