Motorola 2008 Roadmap Leaked - Where’s Android?

Written by AndroidGuys • Apr 18th, 2008 • Category: Hardware News, Leaks, Rumors, and Hacks, Recent News

The last of the 4 founding members of the Open Handset Alliance doesn’t look to be dropping an Android handsets this year. We’re not surprised though. Take a look at these handsets, all of which were designed prior to the division splitting announcements. They look like the standard fare of devices that Motorola’s offered the last 3-4 years.

They’ve yet to make any statements regarding their commitments to the OHA, but with the other 3 players already lined up to drop handsets later this year and early ‘09, we’d love to see what Motorola has. Considering there are other companies outside of the alliance who are designing devices around Android, Motorola needs to kick it into high gear soon or else risk losing even more market share.

  1. Sad. I used to be the biggest moto fan boy. I do not expect any Moto hardware to officially support Android ever, they have big investments in their own OSes and long term contractual obligations to others ( Symbian ). The more I read, the more I think we need to get friendly with the people at the chip level, like Texas Instruments.

“…the movement toward open source software will only accelerate. Google’s Android will be a major driver here. I believe that the combination of a popular platform like Android coupled with wireless processing technology like TI’s OMAP™ platform.” - Texas Instruments employee

I would like to see more emphasis on some kinda “Chip watch” here. A weekly ( Daily? ) round up of quotes, emails, announcements by the people making Android compatible hardware. Ask them to write guess blog posts, or make podcasts of a few minutes of dialog from someone in the PR department, whatever. Video from inside the manufacturing plants of Android compatible CPUs? If we want a “gPhone” ASAP, I think its going to be up to us, at the grass roots level, to connect with hardware manufacturers - waiting for some big corporate deal between greedy carriers may be too slow ( if at all ).
